A YOUNG Goostrey playwright will see his black comedy staged in his home village during this year’s Goosfest.

Matthew Smith, 24, who writes under the name of Matthew Gabrielli, wrote Removed and Destroyed whilst a member of the Young Writers Group at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre.

The play, which has been produced by the Lion Tamers Theatre Company, was first staged in Salford earlier this year where it attracted a number of four and five star reviews.

Taking the “Goosfest after the Watershed” slot, which was successfully introduced to the Festival schedule last year, the hour long play can be seen at Goostrey Village Hall on Wednesday 8 October at 9.30pm. It features Kevin Dewsbury who is well known on the Cheshire comedy circuit

As Matthew explains the play, which is scheduled to be performed at other North West venues, is based on his love dystopian fiction and examines basic human rights and civil liberties

“Orwell's 1984 is one my favourite books, the comic book V for Vendetta is a masterpiece and a big healthy dose of Catch 22 and Kafka have clearly influenced the way I see the world.

“When I began writing it, the debate surrounding the deportation of Abu Qatada was in full swing what interested me most about the debate was how cavalier the mainstream media and politicians were when it came to idea of Qatada's human rights. The idea that because this man was dedicated to the destruction of civil liberties and human rights he was himself not entitled to these basic rights.”

Goosfest kicks off on Friday 3 October when the world famous Foden’s Brass Band, will perform at Terra Nova School at 8pm.The Band will play from the repertoire, which took it to the coveted British Open Championships and the National Championships of Great Britain in 2012.
