RESIDENTS on a 'deadly' section of road running through a village on the outskirts of Knutsford have thanked the council for implementing a series of improvements which have prevented accidents in the past year.

In recent years, the A50 in Over Peover has earned its reputation as one of the most deadly sections of highway in Cheshire.

Over the past five years, a short section of the road no more than a quarter a mile in length, has been the scene of more than 80 accidents, dozens of serious injuries, and five deaths.

Following the most recent series of accidents, which included the tragic death of Stacey Wright, an 18 year old woman from Sandbach, and the demolition of a 18th century listed cottage – which happened a year ago this week – residents began a campaign to improve safety on the road.

They proposed a series of changes including speed reductions, double white lines, and resurfacing to improve safety in wet weather.

Resident, Brian Glover-Smith, who headed the action group, told the Guardian the improvements had worked.

"Every single month there were accidents involving cars leaving the road," he said.

"There could have been many more fatalities had any of these met with opposing traffic or pedestrians."

Following a meeting with the Cheshire East Council leaders in November 2013, residents worked with the Highways Department to agree a scheme to improve safety and prevent further injury and death.

The scheme was implemented in stages from January to June this year and is now complete.

Since June there have been no reported accidents.

Brian added: "I was delighted with how seriously the council took the issue. They worked closely with residents to refine and implement the changes.

"We are impressed at how quickly they have responded and we know that their prompt intervention will save lives.

"There is such a difference in the traffic flow, I can just tell when I stand at my gate and look."
