A BOOK of love is the inspiration behind a charming literary-themed bench tucked in the garden of a Mobberley home.

Carole Brown, of Hall Lane, is the proud owner of a rare BookBench, created by one of her old friends, Chris Wilkinson, creative director of Wild in Art.

Around 50 bespoke sculptures of famous book titles, such as Wind in the Willows, George Orwell’s 1984 and Dr Seuss, were created for Wild in Art’s latest London-wide public event, Books about Town.

All of the benches have been designed and created by individual professional artists and were on display throughout the summer in locations across the capital.

As a friend of Chris, Carole was able to purchase a bench for her garden and was pointed in the direction of artist Candida Boyes to design the sculpture.

Candida, who also acted as the artistic director for the Books around Town project, was asked to use The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady as her inspiration.

Carole said: “I wanted it like The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady as it was the first book my now husband gave to me 47 years ago.

“All in all it is so special.”

Visitors to Mobberley Village Open Gardens this summer may have seen Candida in action.

“The fascinated visitors may be interested to see the finished result, which now overlooks the pond in the wildlife area of our garden in garden,” added Carole.

Although Carole’s bench will become a permanent feature in her garden, the other BookBenches will be auctioned at an event in the Southbank Centre to raise funds for the National Literacy Trust's vital work to raise literacy levels in the UK.
