TRAVELLERS using Goostrey train station have had their commutes brightened up thanks to art work provided by pupils from the village.

Teacher Becky Cowell asked the children at Goostrey Community Primary School to think about the village's Rose Day, which has been celebrated annually for more than 100 years.

She asked the children to draw what they remembered about the day and a selection of pictures have been placed in the waiting room on the Crewe platform.

Several children produced multi-coloured maypoles, while others drew the swing boats, the Ferris Wheel or the plate smash.

One child included speech bubbles: ‘me next’ and ‘such fun’. And of course there were children in costumes who had paraded through the village including The Bridal Group, Children of the World, the Rose Bud Queen and the Rose Queen with her attendants.

Peter Godfrey, chair of Goostrey Parish Council and vice chair of Friends of Goostrey Station, said: "It is good to see local children involved in improving our local railway station.

"This is the third art exhibition and we thank all who were involved.’"

Cyril Caulkin, fellow parish councillor and chair of FOGS, said that passengers were looking forward to the next display which would have work from the school’s annual art exhibition.

"We are delighted that this will also be part of the Goosfest Art Trail around Goostrey between 11am and 4pm on Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5," he added.

"More information about Goosfest, the village Arts and Music Festival, can be found at goosfest.com or from the box office on 01477 535367."

Since its formation in June 2012, FOGS has held monthly action days at which volunteers from the village undertake work at the station such as weeding or sweeping.

They also hope to restore the station building. As well as giving the station a makeover, FOGS is collecting and preserving memories, documents, postcards and photographs relating to Goostrey Railway Station.

The group would love to hear from anyone who has a relative who worked at Goostrey Station or the adjacent coal yard.
