FAMILIES are being offered a hands-on day out at Blackden, near Goostrey, to learn about old pottery.

Ancient Secrets is an opportunity to discover what the old vessels were used for, reconstruct broken pots, and discuss ceramics discovered on the ancient site of Toad Hall and the adjoining Old Medicine House.

On Saturday, July 26, adults and children will be encouraged to handle pottery, see how it was made and talk to archaeologists about what it can tell us.

As part of the day, organised by the Blackden Trust, a dating and identification service, very much like the Antiques Roadshow, will enable visitors to bring pieces of pottery they have found or own and find out more about them.

One of the organisers of the event Antonella Novarina said: “By studying old pottery finds and other discoveries it has been established that Blackden has been occupied since prehistory.

“We have found some remarkable pieces which tell us much about the history of the place. The day will be fun and very hands on, offering something for all the family.”

Members of the Goostrey Parish Archive will also be on site to look at items people may bring along Blackden is home to the author Alan Garner.

The Blackden Trust was established by him in 2004 to be guardian of the place. The Trust involves the public in exploring Blackden’s rich history through its artefacts, buildings, records and environment; through survey, excavation and science; through the stories, memories, and the half-forgotten lore that cling to the place.

The event takes place between 10.30am and 3.30pm on Saturday, July 26.

Entry for adults costs £5, with children coming free. For more details visit blackdentrust.org.uk or telephone 01477 571445.
