A HIGH Legh business is hoping to raise funds for a leading military charity through sales of traditional poppies.

In commemoration of all those fallen in warfare since the outbreak of World War One, Hillier, the UK’s leading grower of trees and garden plants, has decided to grow the ‘Flanders’ poppy – and donate 25p from the sale of each plant to Blind Veterans UK.

Garden centres across the UK are taking part in the poppy promotion throughout May and June, including High Legh Garden Centre.

Larry Rynsard, head of marketing at Hillier Nurseries, said: “We know that so many people will want to commemorate the centenary of World War One and feel that selling poppies to help raise funds in aid of Blind Veterans UK is an excellent way of doing this.”

Blind Veterans UK, formerly known as St Dunstan’s, was founded in 1915 as a direct response to the large number of soldiers returning blinded from the battlefields of World War One.

Today, the national charity still supports blind veterans, regardless of when they served or how they lost their sight.
