PLANS have been submitted to turn a site currently home to the High Legh Stores warehouse into 10 new homes.

Trafford Park-based Property Alliance Group Ltd has applied to Cheshire East Council to knock down the empty warehouse, flatten the site and build 10 four-bedroom properties on the land.

In its planning statement to the authority, the developer adds: “The current building is in a poor state of repair and is incapable of economic refurbishment.

"Its replacement by a well-designed small housing development would significantly improve the visual amenities of the area and a key approach to High Legh.

“It would provide important housing opportunities for the local area, including affordable housing. It would help make best use of existing facilities in High Legh, including the vacant places at the local primary school.”

But Michael Potter, who lives in Diamond Cottage on Peacock Lane close to the site, told the council planning officers: “To sum up this is a rural area of High Legh – there are horses and farm animals in the immediate vicinity – please let’s keep it that way or if the council are in mind to consider granting the application, better thought is needed for our privacy and lifestyle.

“The High Legh Stores has been here for many years, in fact there was a covenant on the building until it was sold by the last residents of Beech Tree Farm.

“Maybe it could be developed into something rural or more in keeping with the area.”

In its submissions on the authority’s planning portal, High Legh Parish Council said it supported the proposal but had concerns over the proposed entrance and exit of the site, the style of the buildings would not be suitable for the area and believed there needed to be a mix of property type.

Cheshire East Council’s Northern Planning Committee is set to decide on the scheme at its meeting on Wednesday, May 21.
