A GROUP of animal lovers is campaigning for improved rabbit welfare.

Action for Rabbits was set up in March 2013 and aims to eliminate the suffering of the domestic rabbit and improve welfare standards in the UK.

A spokesman said: "We work with other welfare organisations, veterinary centres, retailers and manufacturers to highlight areas for change, promote good practice and make plans for a better future for the welfare of rabbits in the UK.

"So that Action for Rabbits can continue our good work in 2014 and beyond, we need to develop a base of volunteers. Nia Faulder has been appointed Area Co-ordinator for Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Wirral and Cheshire and will work to build a volunteer base and develop a working relationship with local veterinarians, rescue organisations, charities, retailers and members of the public.

"Nia is organising an initial meeting and would like to invite potential volunteers to explain the work of Action for Rabbits, both locally and nationally. This meeting is to be held on Monday 24th February 2014 at Leigh Miner’s Welfare Club, Twist Lane, Leigh. WN7 4EF. The meeting will start at 18:00 and end at approximately 20:00."
