A CHELFORD community group has received £500 in funding from Skipton Building Society.

Chelford Tenants and Residents Association is a group run by 10 volunteers who work to reduce isolation amongst the elderly community.

This week they found out they are one of Skipton Building Society’s ‘Big 160, securing a slot as a winner in its Grassroots Giving initiative.

The group’s most recent project is to set up a community gardening project, alongside a greenhouse. This would give the elderly community a project to put their energy into, and contribute to. It would also create a place of relaxation, and be seen as a further way of reducing isolation.

David Kent, a volunteer said: “Chelford Tenants' and Residents' Association is a very pro-active organisation which has already helped to improve the lives of people in Chelford. Grassroots Giving has enabled us to further develop our community garden project which will enhance the lives of so many people.”

David Cutter, Skipton’s group chief executive said: “Everyone at Skipton Building Society has thoroughly enjoyed running this programme which has brought out of the woodwork so many hard working local community groups, which we would never otherwise have known of.

"It is these kind of groups that make communities and neighbourhoods stronger, especially in difficult economic times, and we’re delighted to have been able to showcase some of the unsung heroes across the UK who are really going the extra mile to make life better for everyone.”
