George Osborne: Your 'Briton of the Year'?
7:00am Friday 3rd January 2014 in News
TATTON MP George Osborne has been named ‘Briton of the Year’ 2013 by The Times – but not everyone agrees the Chancellor is a worthy winner of the top spot.
Mr Osborne was described as a ‘clear choice’ for the award after overseeing ‘a remarkable recovery in the economy’.
The reasoning behind the decision was explained at length in the leading articles column of the paper’s December 27 edition.
“There is a case that the whole of this parliament, and not just the politics of 2013, has been dominated by a single decision taken by one man in 2010. That decision was the plan to eliminate Britain’s structural deficit within a single Parliament and that man was George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer,” the article states.
“The resilient realism of the Chancellor has conditioned British politics in 2013 and made the weather.”
Although The Times credit him with being greatly responsible for bringing the economy back from the brink, it also highlighted the series of shortcomings that defined Mr Osborne in 2012 – such as the ‘omnishambles’ budget.
However, it would seem that these series of shortcomings have not been as easily forgiven or forgotten by his constituents.
On Twitter Knutsfordians reacted to the news. Linda Smyth @Lindasmythmcfc said: “@KnutsfordNews That is just wrong #immoral He should be very near the bottom of any such list”, and Paul Miller @graphicrust said: “there are over 60 million brits. Surely there must be at least 59 million more worthy than GO”.
Another usder, @sharpsecret27 Dec said:”@KnutsfordNews No, I do not agree. Wallpaper George is a hopeless Chancellor and an inadequate constituency MP.
David freeland @davidfreelander17h said: “Osborne doesn't deserve this-he has presided over a growing national debt and cruelly cuts incomes of poor or sick Britons. Should be awarded to Alan Rushbridger- editor of the Guardian for exposing vast surveillance of personal internet use by NSA +GCHQ.”
Facebook users also has their say, with one user, Elaine Napier, stating: “What sort of Briton of the year? Incompetent? Arrogant? Self-serving? Yup, he's certainly all of those.”
The Guardian also took to the streets of Knutsford to see if residents agreed with their MP’s newly awarded title.
Eight out of 10 residents disagreed with Mr Osborne being named ‘Briton of the Year’ and cited reasons such as ‘it’s his job – why should he be praised for it’ and ‘there are a worthier people who are more deserving’.
Other people surveyed said that they think Mr Osborne does a ‘fine’ job but that he should do more for his constituents and not to forget he is their MP as well as the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
