VOLUNTEERS, wrapped up in winter woollies and armed with a HOST of useful information, took to Knutsford’s streets on December 12 to offer a helping hand.

Knutsford Hosts, the new town-wide community volunteering pilot scheme, took part in the late night shopping event, Knuts About Christmas, acting as meeters and greeters and handing out shopping maps.

The volunteer group, who welcomed four new Hosts on the night, also conducted a short survey of customers and retailers for the Town Council.

Joint Project Manager Sarah Flannery said: “Lots of people stopped to say how good it is for the town to have Hosts as community volunteers. There’s so much going on in 2014 that there’s something to suit everyone who wants to do some volunteering – even if they only have a little time to spare.”

Knutsford Hosts gives people the opportunity to train as community volunteers to represent the town and, at no cost to themselves, they will gain the nationally recognised Award in Community Volunteering (CVQ).

This qualification will be of use to young people building up their CV, out of work people keen to maintain their skills, or people who are simply keen to do something for the town.

Through the scheme, volunteers will get the opportunity to be involved with events such as the Royal May Day, Christmas Weekend, the Artisan Market, the RHS Tatton Flower Show and the Knutsford Promenades.

Sarah added: “We are keen to recruit as many people as possible to help make sure 2014 is a great year for Knutsford.”

Knutsford Hosts are hoping to recruit another 15 Hosts in January. Induction training begins on January 20, which will be followed by CVQ training for anyone who wants to gain the free qualification.
The Hosts first event of 2014 is planned to take place at the Artisan Market on Sunday February 2.
