PASSENGERS were surprised to find that winter had come early to Goostrey Railway Station.

At the end of November, the waiting room on the Crewe platform was transformed by an art display entitled Cold.

Becky Cowell, a teacher at Goostrey Community Primary School, provided the pupils’ work which was part of last year’s whole school exhibition.

Numerous compliments were heard as people waited for the train or alighted at the end of their journey.

One window of the building displayed words such as Cold, Ice, Snow and Frost in huge letters.

Another had descriptions of Ice Age animals which made the reader shiver.

Inside the waiting room passengers were greeted by huge models of three penguins and a polar bear in front of a wall covered with elaborate decorations in ‘cold’ colours.

“The whole display is particularly effective at night when illuminated by the station lights,” said Cyril Caulkin, parish councillor and chair of the Friends of Goostrey Station (FOGS).

The art exhibition is a new project for FOGS as the team tries to improve their local railway station.

Regular working parties will continue between 10am and 1pm usually on the second Sunday of each month.

The first dates for 2014 are January 12 and February 9.

All members of the community are welcome to help us, for example by weeding or sweeping. Just join the team for as long as you are able.

As well as giving the station a makeover, FOGS is collecting and preserving memories, documents, postcards and photographs relating to Goostrey Railway Station.

The group are also keen to hear from people who may have had relatives who worked at Goostrey Station or the adjacent coal yard.
