HOLMES Chapel Singers opened their 28th Season in fine style on November 30.

The singers performed under their Musical Director, Philip Crookal, and the main work in the concert was ‘St. Nicolas’ by Benjamin Britten, performed to mark the centenary of the composer’s birth.

On the evening, both the Choir and the Tenor Soloist rose to the occasion and were warmly applauded by a capacity audience.

The Soloist, Stephen Newlove, in the role of Nicolas and Sam Horton, as Young Nicolas, impressed the audience, who, unusually, were also part of the performance.

They were required to join the choir in singing two well known hymns before the interval break.

In the second half, the mood changed with the two items, ‘When Icicles hang’ by John Rutter, and ‘On Christmas Night’ by Bob Chilcott. Both compilations were on the themes of winter, Christmas and merrymaking.

The singing was underpinned and enhanced by the Orchestra throughout the performances.
