A GROUP of Knutsford residents are hoping to encourage a little community spirit by transforming a plot of wasteland into a green and vibrant space.

Residents at Elizabeth Gaskell Court are looking to change the ground – currently designated as an underused washing area – into a useful community space for the good of all residents.

Sue Thornley, who has lived in Elizabeth Gaskell Court for three years, said: “Being an over 55 years of age property close, we hope this will encourage all to meet and gain new neighbours and friends.

“We don’t have back gardens, but this will give residents somewhere to sit and read a book, have a glass of wine or just get some fresh air.

“The only place we have to sit at the minute is on the front, but who wants to sit facing the car park?

“It will mean they can invite their friends and family over, and they would be able to sit outside instead of being forced to stay in.”

If the plans are successful the plot of land will become home to raised beds, herb gardens, fruit trees and flowers.

There will also be seating to suit all mobilities and spaces that can be used for barbecues and other community activities.

The 64-year-old now hopes to find items to be used on the site.

She said: “We’ve been talking about it for about six months – we’ve got a mini map of how we want it to look and it’s just about getting the other residents interested now.

“We are hoping to obtain small funds to help with flagging, fencing, seating areas and the raised beds.

“I have lots of ideas for this little space, I just need people to start turning around to help.”

Donations of usable wheelbarrows, portable greenhouses, solar lights, furniture, seeds, compost and hand tools will all be accepted by the group.

Mum-of-four Sue added: “We are hoping this garden will be up and usable come the early spring time.

“This space will be a welcoming attraction to new neighbours to the close in the future.”

Peaks and Plains Housing Trust (PPHT), which owns the land, said it welcomed the proposals.

A spokesman said: “PPHT are working together with the residents to help make that happen.

“They are also looking at ways to help fund it and are doing everything they can to ensure this happens. They are really pleased with what the residents have suggested.”
