UPDATE: second M6 lane re-opened. Ten mile queue stretches to Stoke
A FURTHER lane has been re-opened on the M6 Northbound, following a lorry fire which resulted in a full closure.
There were no casualties, but the closure of the M6 during morning rush hour has led to significant traffic disruption, with 10 miles of standing traffic extending from the scene to Junction 16 at Stoke.
The intensity of the fire saw the flames rise above the level of the bridge carrying Northwich Road.
As a precautionary measure, and pending advice from a structural engineer, the bridge has been closed to traffic.
This sees the A5033 closed between its junction with the A556 and Sudlow Lane until further notice.
The work of Police, Fire, and the Highways Agency at the scene of the incident saw Lane three re-opened initially, followed by Lane two.
However, at present, Lane one and the hard shoulder remain closed while the lorry is recovered, and the carriageway surface is checked to ensure that the fire has not caused any significant damage.
Police thanked motorists for their patience, some whom have had several hours delay on their journey.
Significant delays and congestion remain ongoing in the area and motorists are advised to either delay their journey or to seek another route.
