Olympic spirit is inspiration for Knutsford Hosts volunteer group
PLANS are well underway for a new town-wide community volunteering pilot scheme – Knutsford Hosts.
The project is the brainchild of Knutsfordian Sarah Flannery and is being backed by six Knutsford-based organisations; Knutsford Town Council, The Welcome, Knutsford Heritage Centre, Community Spirit, Peaks and Plains and Great Places.
The idea for the project was inspired by the London 2012 ‘Gamemakers’. Sarah saw an opportunity to create a team of trained community volunteers to represent Knutsford and become an invaluable community resource for events in the town.
Sarah, a marketing and PR consultant, said: “Community volunteering is good for the community and the individuals involved and can have a big social impact. Usually, though, programmes are organisation-specific.
“The innovation behind the pilot is that it will be town-wide and therefore likely to attract people new to volunteering.”
Volunteers will gain the nationally recognised Award in Community Volunteering, at no cost, and will get the opportunity to be involved with events such as the Royal May Day, Christmas Weekend, the Artisan Market, the RHS Tatton Flower Show and the Knutsford Promenades.
“Knutsford Hosts is an ambitious project but I know there are many, many people who are passionate about Knutsford and I’m sure a substantial number will be interested in getting involved with this pilot,” added Sarah.
Knutsford Town Clr Mike Houghton is a keen supporter if the project and is urging potential Knutsford Hosts to pop along to an open day next week.
He added: “Knutsford is blessed with many exceptional people who volunteer their time and skills in a whole variety of forms.
“This is a marvellous opportunity to not only to give these people some real recognition for their dedication but to provide some tangible support in helping promote our exceptional and unique town.
“The town council is delighted to be involved with this project and we will give it our full support.”
The Knutsford Hosts Open Day will take place on Saturday, October 26 at two separate venues: the Welcome Cafe from 10am-12pm and the Heritage Centre from 2-5pm.
