Tom toughs it out for charity
AFTER a Bond film stuntman first encouraged him to sign up for a Tough Guy event in 2005, Mobberley man Tom Grindel is now approaching an impressive milestone.
Tom has gone on to complete 13 Tough Guy events and will be competing in another in January in his quest to reach 20.
He has supported a number of charities over the years, including Cardiac Risk for the Young, a charity close to his heart since he lost a friend in 2003.
Tom, 29, from Mobberley showed the extent of his grit earlier this year when he completed the brutal assault course in bare feet, after surrendering his shoes to a swamp while leading the field.
No stranger to extreme endurance events, Tom has completed the Marines Commando Challenge and a Brecon Beacons military race carrying a 40lb backpack, but says he is still searching for a challenge that equals the Tough Guy event.
“What makes Tough Guy so unique first of all is the fact that the obstacles are purpose-built and permanent,” he said.
Tom competed in Tough Guy as part of a 25-man team named The Miners, who finished in first place in three consecutive events in 2007 and 2008.
Tom himself achieved his best result in the summer of 2012 when he finished fifth out of more than 1,500 competitors.
“Personally, there are three highlights to a Tough Guy event,” said Tom. “That sense of impending doom at the start line, the adrenaline carrying you through each obstacle, and that cup of coffee waiting for you at the finish line.
“Nothing else gives me the satisfaction of finishing a Tough Guy.”
