Help Cara to bring festive cheer to African orphans
A KNUTSFORD Girl Guide is hoping to bring some Christmas cheer to the African orphanage which ‘changed her life’ – and is appealing for residents’ help.
Cara Armstrong, of 6th Knutsford Rainbows, was selected from dozens of Cheshire Girl Guides to travel to Ghana to work in an orphanage for two weeks.
The Knutsford Academy student returned from her trip in August, but after being touched by the lives of the people she met there Cara vowed to continue helping King Jesus Charity Home from back at home.
The 16-year-old said: “Ghana is an incredible country and everyone I met was very friendly.
“King Jesus Charity Home is a lifeline for children who have nobody else – they have no food, shelter and access to education.
“I am now raising money so I can send all the children a Christmas present they will enjoy, and would welcome any donations.”
Cara travelled with nine girls to the orphanage in Bodi, Kumasi, with the aim of teaching the children skills which would benefit their lives, such as personal and road safety, hygiene, teamwork and leadership skills.
However, when they got there, they found their plans were impractical to use in the environment due to the large number of children – 175 people live there, ranging from a three-month-old baby to a 22-year-old woman.
Cara, from Ashworth Park, said: “We adapted our ideas and it changed into more of a summer camp type of arrangement. It was the children’s summer holidays so they wanted to be more active and have fun with us.
“We still helped to develop their communication, teamwork and leadership skills through games and discussion.”
Having returned home, the orphanage and the children she met are never far from Cara’s mind.
“Having learned so much about the orphans’ lives it was hard to return back to normal, and it took a while to settle back in to home again. They will always be in our hearts,” she added.
“The trip opened our minds to so many new things, and it can really open your eyes to what is going on in the world.”
