Motorway link road wins Cheshire East Council support
CHESHIRE East Council has announced its support for plans to develop a new dual carriageway linking the M6 to the M56.
The council agreed in principle to support the Highway Agency’s proposals for the A556 Knutsford to Bowdon improvement scheme at a Cabinet meeting last week.
The new five-mile dual carriageway would run mainly to the west of the existing A556, from junction 19 of the M6 near Knutsford to junction 7 of the M56 near Bowdon.
Cheshire East Council said it was content to take over the management of the de-trunked sections of the former A556 and be responsible for their maintenance as part of its highway network, subject to the agreement of a commuted sum to cover additional costs.
The de-trunked sections include the A50 and A556 Mere crossroads and A5304 and A556 at Bucklow Hill.
As well as those, the A50 and new A556 are included in principle in the revised junction designs submitted to the planning inspectorate.
The new road would re-join the existing A556 for a short section north of Bucklow Hill, which would be upgraded to modern dual carriageway standards.
Any minor amendments to the scheme details, such as junction designs, will be delegated to Head of Environmental Protection and Enhancement, with local ward members and the portfolio holder being informed.
