Town’s own Sir Chris is crowned Champion of Manchester
MERE Olympian Sir Chris Hoy was crowned the Champion of Manchester at a glittering dinner in the city at the weekend.
Sir Chris, one of Mere's most famous residents, was bestowed the honour at a dinner hosted by fellow Olympian Diane Modahl on behalf of the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation (DMSF).
Many famous faces were in attendance including BBC sports presenter Dan Walker, who acted as compere and hosted a live Q&A session with Sir Chris.
Sir Chris said: “I am delighted to be involved in this event to raise funds for the aspiring athletes of the future and honoured that the organisation chose me as the inaugural champion.”
City of Champions is the brainchild of Diane, and will be run as an annual celebration of the many champions the city has developed and nurtured.
DMSF gives young people access to world-class coaching, with the aim of creating further champions of the future, whether that be in the arena of sport, business, culture or politics.
Speaking of her hopes for the charity moving forward, Diane said: “We hope that by inspiring young people and the business community with stories of champions of the past, present and future we’ll not only raise more funds but help more young people to build on their aspirations and achieve their goals.”
