Regulars join battle to get late licence for their local
REGULARS have created a 200-strong petition after their pub was criticised by neighbours for applying for a late licence.
Some homeowners living close to the Legh Arms on Brook Street are opposing plans for its owners to open the pub into the early hours not only at the weekend but during the week as well.
The licence application states the pub company wants to sell alcohol from 8am until 1am on Sunday to Thursday then at the weekend from 8am until 2am.
In the Guardian three weeks ago, Tim Coulson, director of operations for the Alehouse Collection – that owns the site – said the request was for the pub to hold weddings and other events and was not a case of turning it into a late-night drinking establishment.
But Knutsford Town Council’s planning and licensing committee objected to the proposed licence, saying it was ‘inappropriate’.
And now the pub’s drinkers have drawn-up a petition to show they are fully behind Tim’s plans.
Bill Gore, of Legh Road, decided to collect the names, which he will send to Cheshire East Council’s licensing team.
“There’s only about half a dozen who are against it but we’ve got 200-odd for it,” he said.
“They’re objecting to noise, but there’s no noise now, so why would it be noisier if they opened later?
“The owners are changing the fabric of the place and Knutsford Town Council didn’t seem to understand that. This petition will be representative of the people in the area and not the ones who are trying to oppose it.”
Bill added pubs in the area were closing, like the Duncow in Ollerton, and the late licence application was a sign that the owners of the Legh Arms wanted to make it a success.
“This pub is a meeting place for everyone in this area, from Legh Road to Manor Park,” he said.
“The place has been done up and they’ve put in a lot of money. No-one told them about the meeting so they weren’t able to fight their corner against the people who didn’t want this to happen.”
