Van crashes on A50 hours after car smashes into listed cottage on same road
A VAN ended up on its side in the middle of the A50 Holmes Chapel Road, just hours after a crash in the same spot.
The red Vauxhall Vivaro came to a halt on its side at around 6.30pm on Monday, September 16, as recovery teams worked to remove an Audi RS4 that had crashed into a house on the same road.
Andy Rattary, who lives in the cottage involved in the earlier collision, said: “Egertons had pulled up to drag the car out of the house and we just heard the noise again – the van was on its side in the middle of the road.”
Farmer Ian McGrath, of Grange Farm, said he blames the road’s hatched markings for the increased number of collisions.
He said: “I have lived here for a long time and it has been a lot worse since the chevrons were put in the middle of the road – people use it as an extra lane.
“You can stand here and watch as the cars and the wagons overtake – the chevrons have made things worse.
“I think they should put double white lines in – that would deter people then.”
A new speed limit will soon be introduced on the A50 following several crashes – including one fatal – over the past few months.
But Ian fears that the 50mph restriction will not be enough to prevent accidents.
“It isn’t the road that is dangerous,” said Ian.
“It’s the drivers that are dangerous – they don’t respect the 60mph speed limit or the conditions.
“If people maintain the 60 limit that would be a start but you can’t suddenly expect them to come down to 50mph – it’s not going to happen.
“That is what everyone needs to take away from this. It’s the same road as it has always been but people drive faster now and take more risks.”
