Ste hopes to strike the right chord as a jobbing composer
FOR many graduates leaving university means forming an orderly queue at the foot of the career ladder, but one ambitious Knutsford composer has leapt straight to the top after founding his own music business.
Ste Miller graduated in Music Composition from Coventry University last year and is now embarking on a business venture as founder of Black Beach Music – a contemporary, forward-thinking music composition service.
The 21-year-old specialises in electronic music and is experienced composing in a variety of styles for a range of purposes.
However, the Garden Road resident admits the financial responsibility of starting from scratch has proved slightly daunting.
“I’m confident it can be successful,” he said. “It’s going well so far and it’s exciting, although it has been a bit daunting.
“I’m living with my dad at the moment trying to save a little as I’ve invested a lot of my own money into getting it started.
“But I guess it’s the dream and if I can’t try and chase it now then there will probably never be a better opportunity.”
Ste’s music career began at the age of seven when he learned to play the piano and eventually led to the creation of Black Beach Music in April this year.
“It started off with some work for my old university and some promotional pieces, the main purpose is creating bespoke music for advertising, film, events and more,” he explained.
“It’s still relatively new. The aim is to pick up work countrywide not just locally, as a lot of the composing is done from the computer.
“But I’m hoping to move to London soon as there will be more opportunity to get my work out there and make contacts.”
On leaving university Ste helped to fund the business plan by teaching piano but has watched many of his class mates head in different directions.
“Everyone took different routes when we left university, but a few people are working for companies such as the one I’ve set up.
“It is a little bit nerve-wracking, but it’s what I’ve dreamed of.”
