KNUTSFORDIANS are being told to brace themselves for further roadwork misery after it was confirmed that the work outside Aldi will close some of the town’s most important roads during the night.

Roadworks on Hollow Lane and Brook Street have crippled the town in recent weeks – and were made even worse when more works took place on Toft Road.

The building work on Brook Street has been as a result of the Aldi development taking place but on Tuesday it was confirmed that further works would need to take place during the night time.

Traffic contractors working on behalf of the German supermarket giant told Knutsford Town Council last week that Brook Street and Hollow Lane would be closed for a period of up to two weeks from 6pm until 6am.

But as the Guardian went to press the Highways department at Cheshire East Council could not confirm when the work was to take place.

Adam Keppel-Garner, deputy town clerk at Knutsford Town Council, told the Guardian: “Clr Vivien Davies met with Aldi a week ago but they didn’t give massive details.

“They told her that the traffic signals would be moved in early April but they did mention there will be overnight work but did not tell us when that would be.”

A notice has also been served that will see traffic prohibited from using Church Hill for the next 18 months so work on St John’s Baptist Church can take place.

Traffic will be stopped from heading down the cut through from April 12, with a diversion put in place that involves heading down Toft Road, Adams Hill and turning left into King Street.

While the order has been made for 18 months, St John’s expect the work to be completed by November 29, 2013.

Knutsford's rush hour on the roads is 3.30pm to 6.30pm these days so trying to close main roads at 6pm must be a joke.

Am I the only one missing something? Surely when the plans were submitted there would have been illustrations of how the road layout would look (if not, why not?), did no-one think to ask the developers how and when this work would take place (again, if not, why not?), or did they think that you can change a road layout with no traffic chaos?

The council sounds awfully supine. Why didn't they press for specific details?
