Knutsford May Queen delighted at her royal honour

KNUTSFORD’S 149th May Queen has told the Guardian of her pride at being part of the town’s history.
Jenny Warburton, 13, who was a court lady in the 2012 festival, was awarded the title of Royal May Queen 2013 at the selection ceremony at Egerton Youth Club last month.
She will be crowned on the Heath – and take on the role from current May Queen Lakeisha Bradbury – on May 4 at the Royal May Queen festival, surrounded by thousands of revellers and well-wishers.
“It was a really big shock for me, and I couldn’t quite believe it,” the Knutsford Academy pupil said of her selection.
“My friends have been really supportive, and they’ve been congratulating me.
“They just keep asking me about my dress and what it is going to be like.
“It hasn’t really sunk in, but I’ve looked at the history and all the past May Queens – and one of them had my surname although I don’t think we’re related.”
Jenny – who has a sister Mary and brother Matthew – enjoys singing, dancing – particularly ballet, in which she is working towards her grade six – playing the violin and hockey.
“I’m looking forward to the excitement and celebration of the big day with so many people taking part,” she added.
“But the main thing will be riding in the horse and carriage. Lakeisha congratulated me like everyone else, and I know her as she used to go to my ballet school, so she’s been really supportive.
“My big sister was a maid of honour, so it’s nice that I’m also part of the May Queen festival.”
Knutsford Royal May Day is a charity, and if you would like to raise funds for it contact secretary Anne de Ruiter on 01270 500537.
