A POLICE investigation is under way after a rifle was found by community volunteers while they were clearing up a woodland area.

The group were clearing up St Johns Wood on Wednesday, February 27, as part of an ongoing project when they stumbled across the rifle wrapped in plastic bags in the undergrowth.

Kane Gunter, who was one of those helping to clear the area, told the Guardian he knew it was the ‘real deal’ straight away.

“After checking it, it was a 2.2 calibre rifle and not an air rifle,” he said.

“I said ‘you best put that down as it’s not a toy’ and then the police came and took it away.”

A police spokesperson said: “Initial checks on the ownership proved negative, and the investigation is ongoing.”
