ONE of Cheshire’s oldest residents, who lived in a care home in Knutsford, has died at the grand old age of 106.

Molly Wright, who lived at Sharston House Nursing Home on Manor Park South, died on February 14.

The farmer’s daughter was born on September 18, 1906, and grew up in High Legh, attending the village primary school. She was one of four children, and became a Sunday school teacher.

More than 100 friends and family were at her funeral on Wednesday, at St John’s in High Legh before a burial service at St Mary’s in Rostherne.

Her niece, Ruth Barlow, told the Guardian her aunt had lived in Sharston House for the past six years.

“There are not many people who reach that age,” she said.

“She was the oldest person in Knutsford and probably the oldest in Cheshire but I haven’t checked that – she was certainly one of the oldest.

“I’ve struggled to talk to her for the past year, and I’m not sure she knew I was there to be honest.”

Molly married Arthur in 1930 and moved to Dairy Farm where they looked after cows and sheep before retiring in 1957.

A love of gardening took over, which helped Molly get over the loss of Arthur, who died in 1983.

She won many trophies in High Legh’s annual show and one of the trophies is named in her honour.

“The staff at Sharston will miss her because she was the oldest resident and some will be at the funeral,” Ruth added.

“She had a very strong association with the church – maybe that’s the secret to living so long.”
