FIONA Bruce has voted against gay marriage.

The MP for Holmes Chapel, Cranage and Goostrey also spoke out in a debate in the House of Commons yesterday, Tuesday, saying she was opposed to same sex marriages due to her Christian faith.

The mother-of-two said: "I believe that marriage is a life commitment between a man and a woman for their benefit and the benefit of the children they may have, and for the stability of wider society, and that no Government should redefine it."

MPs voted in favour of the gay marriage bill by 400 votes to 175.

Among them were Tatton MP and Chancellor George Osborne.

But more Tories voted against the bill - 136 - than for it - 127 - while a further 40 Conservative MPs abstained or did not vote.

During the debate, Mrs Bruce said that 95 per cent of her constituents who wrote to her about the issue shared her views.

Eddisbury MP Stephen O'Brien also voted against the bill while Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans and Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson did not vote.

The majority of Labour MPs supported the plans with just under 10 per cent of the party voting against the bill.

During the debate, Labour MP David Lammy said: "As much as I would want Britain always to be the beating heart of radical and progressive change, it is not.

"At root, it has always had a small c conservative spine running through it."
