A FORMER Knutsford town councillor has celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Jess Thompson-Hughes and his wife Margaret tied the knot on December 18, 1962 in Edinburgh after eloping.

They had met at a cinema in Manchester in January 1961 after leaving school.

In 1970, with the children – Denise and son Jess – they moved to Knutsford, where they lived for 30 years.

During that time the children attended St John’s Wood, then Knutsford High School, before Jess joined the army and Denise, a qualified nurse, left the country to live in USA.

Margaret worked for various companies in town, while Jess was a school governor on top of his role as a councillor.

Jess said: “Over the years we made many friends in what must be one of the most beautiful and interesting areas in England.

“We retired to Somerset in 2003 to be near our son and his family, but thought there may be some Guardian readers who remember us.”
