Longridge man sets up child protection petition
5:30pm Tuesday 22nd January 2013 in News
A LONGRIDGE resident has set up a petition in a bid to change the sentencing laws for those convicted of crimes against children.
Peter Russell, who is a NSPCC campaigner, told the Guardian he believes the sentences handed down in cases recently, both nationally and locally, show that they do not reflect the severity of the crime.
And as such he has set up a petition and lobbied George Osborne to voice his opinions on the matter.
“Reading the local and national papers recently highlights stories regarding the inappropriate sentences that do not reflect the severity of the crime,” he said.
“What I’m trying to do with this petition is to get the signatures and take it to the government. It seems to me that quite a lot of these child abusers are being released early and let off and I don’t think that is right.”
