Aspiring Knutsford musician clinches town bursary

AN aspiring musician has clinched a bursary created for Knutsford’s young students.

Knutsford Town Council and Knutsford and District Lions Club announced that the awards panel has decided to support three students through the Millennium Bursary.

This year the Millennium Bursary was awarded to Tom Baston, reading Music and Mathematics at Durham University.

Tom, 20, of Rockford Lodge, will receive £300 and is in his second year at Durham.

He said: “We saw it advertised in the paper last year and I went for it as I thought I was eligible but was told I would have to come back this year.

“I’ve got essays and compositions to do before I go back later this month and the rest of the time will be exam preparation.

“I don’t tend to mix the subjects up, so I study maths, and I study music.

“I tend to go from one if I am getting tired of the other.”

Further awards, donated by Knutsford Lions, were made to Carly Redhead, reading Philosophy and Economics at University of Bristol and to Neil Cripps, reading Business and Human Resource Management at De Monfort University.

The panel consisted of the Mayor Clr Vivien Davies, Michael Goldman, from Knutsford Lions and former town mayor Jennifer Holbrook, who initiated the bursary in 2000.

Clr Davies said: “We are again very pleased to support the students in their studies and wish to congratulate all of them on the quality of their presentations at their interviews.”

Dr Goldman added: “It was great to meet the students and hear about the work they are doing and their longer term aspirations post study. We wish them all well and every success in their chosen careers.”

The bursary has been awarded every year since it was founded in 2000.

It is aimed at students who will be going into their third year of higher education in September 2013 and is designed to support students undertaking dissertations or similar projects in the summer of 2013.

Eligibility for the award is based on residency in the town during the holidays.
