KNUTSFORD’S elderly residents on their own this Christmas will get a gift from a stranger thanks to the efforts of a town resident.

Joanne Cadden, 50, has launched an appeal to ensure the elderly are remembered this festive season.

She said she had received around 20 gifts so far, with a promise of around 10 more, but was hoping to persuade more people to donate.

She said: “I’ve received little presents from mums and parents for the cause, I’m going to contact social services because they will know the people who will be on their own. Some of the presents are only small but it is these things that make a difference. We also want to make sure the appeal stays in the Knutsford area.

“Even if we get 30 or 40 presents, we will have 30 or 40 smiles and that is what is all about.”

Joanne told the Guardian the idea came as she was caring for a neighbour.

“I have been caring for an elderly neighbour and it got me thinking about all those people who are on their own,” she added.

“I posted something on my Facebook page and my friends have been busy reposting it and I think we’ve done well so far.

“I feel that young people tend to go to friends but with the elderly they are often consigned to their house and many don’t have family so it’s a case of putting a smile on their faces on Christmas morning.”

People have until Friday to donate presents to her at her house – 7 Boothfields – if not they still have until Saturday to take presents to Age Uk in Knutsford.
