Fears for future of sight group

A SUPPORT group for people with sight loss in Knutsford and Mobberley is in danger of folding unless new volunteers can be found.

The group has around 40 members and helps residents suffering from macular degeneration, an age-related condition affecting central vision.

It is the most common cause of sight loss in Britain and can make everyday tasks like shopping, reading, watching TV and even recognising faces very difficult.

Current group leader Brenda Craig can no longer continue her role, meaning help is needed to carry out admin support, book speakers and plan future meetings.

Brenda, of Malvern Road, said: “When I joined the group I was so relieved to find other people who were in a similar position to me.

“It’s good to be able to meet others and find out how they cope. We’ve had some really interesting speakers and found out a great deal to help us.

“Picking up hints and tips from each other is really important, as is the social side of things. Support groups are a lifeline for many people.”

The group, supported by the Macular Disease Society, meets once a month to provide advice and friendship.

Michelle Dutton, Macular Disease Society support and development manager, said: “There is a wonderful group of people going along who all greatly benefit from the chance to meet with others affected by the condition.

“This, coupled with the group activities, helps people to regain control, build their confidence and get on with living life.

“We would like to get more people to come along but feel worried the group will close unless we can find a new volunteer.

“They won’t be on their own – I am there to support the group as much as possible and provide lots of information.

“We have loads of ideas to share and will put the volunteer in contact with experienced group leaders, most of who have macular disease.”

The next meeting is at Sunrise Senior Living in Hall Lane, Mobberley on January 8, from 1.30pm to 3pm.
