SEWAGE has been streaming down a Mobberley road for the past six months and residents have told council bosses that they have had enough.

Homeowners in Slade Lane are calling on Cheshire East Council to mend the problem, which has resulted in the road becoming slippy.

The Guardian witnessed sewage bubbling up out of a grid and trickling down the road when we visited last Friday.

Dog walkers have reported their pets becoming irritated after walking on the lane and many have resorted to carrying them instead. Horse riders have also avoided the area after complaining of a lack of grip on the road surface and council workers even put up ‘ice warning’ signs this week – which residents believe shows a solution is not around the corner.

Slade Lane homeowner Pauline Hoult said it was not a case of just one or two people complaining – it was the whole road.

She said: “We’ve been told it’s not straight forward but they are not treating it as a priority.

“There is still a horrible stench at the top by the farm house and I have been told that investigations are continuing but no time scale has been given and we feel we are being fobbed off.

“I have a problem getting out of the lane when it’s icy and there is going to be a fatality if they’re not careful because people use it as a cut through.”

United Utilities said it was an issue for Cheshire East Council but its waste water team had been in contact with the authority, while George Osborne, MP for Tatton, told the Guardian he had been in touch with residents and was urging the authority to solve the issue.

A council spokesman said: “We believe this to be treated water, not raw sewage, coming from homes in the area. The council continues to investigate in an attempt to identify the source.

“There is also a partial blockage in the highway drain. Arrangements are currently being made for this to be repaired.

“We are aware that this will cause an unpleasant smell, but people should continue to use their utilities as normal. This will not affect people’s water supply.”
