ENGINEERS were called to Mobberley Road on Sunday after a minor gas leak.
A spokesman for National Grid said a small amount of gas was escaping from a metal pipe which meant contractors had to dig up the grass verge for a temporary fix.
Residents saw fire extinguishers on standby as engineers dug up the verge at about noon.
A specialist team will be on site for a permanent repair next week and the repairs will take around a week.
