Your British Legion branch needs you

KNUTSFORD Royal British Legion (RBL) is on the hunt for a volunteer who can organise the town’s Poppy Appeal for 2013.

The RBL is also appealing for more residents to join as branch and committee members.

Linda Thomas, membership secretary, said: “As with branches throughout the country members locally are dwindling with the passing of time.

“It is a commonly held misconception that you have to have served in the armed forces to be a member, when in fact anyone can join.

“To borrow a slogan from that early conflict ‘your branch needs you’.

“At the moment we are specifically looking for someone with the time to organise the Poppy Appeal for 2013.

“This would suit someone with experience of organising people and while the major impact on the role is in the period leading up to, during and after the Poppy Appeal, it does have an ongoing involvement through the rest of the year.”

Poppies are now on sale in Knutsford in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday.

The RBL is also looking for people who can man the Knutsford branch’s collection points at Booths and the M6 motorway service station.

Knutsford’s Remembrance Sunday parade and wreath-laying ceremonies will be as follows:

9.20 am - Town Mayor Vivien Davies and councillors meet at war memorial opposite St Cross Church, Mobberley Road, to lay wreath

10am - Parade assembles at Ruskin Rooms, Drury Lane

10.15am - The wreath is carried on parade to St Johns Church, Church Hill. The parade stops at the Methodist Church, Princess Street, for the Royal British Legion to present wreath to The Rev Rob Cotton. At the end of the service the parade heads back to Drury Lane

12.30pm - Motor convoy to War Memorial Hospital where a number of Knutsford groups and organisations will lay wreaths

1pm - Drive to Parachute Regiment Memorial at Tatton Park for final wreath laying.

KNUTSFORD’S annual Poppy Concert will then be held on November 17 at the Methodist Church in Princess Street.

The Cheshire Constabulary Band and Corps of Drums will be performing a selection of nostalgic music from 7.30pm.
