Airport cash boost for Knutsford schools

KNUTSFORD schools have been given a cash boost from Manchester Airport.

Bexton, Egerton, Manor Park, St Vincent’s and Mobberley primary schools as well as Knutsford Academy will all benefit from a payment of £1,300.

The one-off sum is being described as a ‘goodwill’ grant to make up for the impact of the schools being under the flightpath of the second runway.

Carol Owen, head teacher of Mobberley Primary School, said: "We were surprised and delighted to receive this grant.

“Together with the support of the school's PTA and parent's hands-on help with the installation, we upgraded some of our staff facilities from rather tired to a more pleasant, safe and businesslike environment.

“We could only do this with these additional funds."

The grants for Knutsford’s schools follows an agreement by Manchester Airport Group in June to stump up £1million in compensation to be shared among 560 Knutsford and Mobberley residents.

The deal was negotiated by Jeff Gazzard, of Manchester Airport Environment Network, and Tatton MP George Osborne.

Mr Osborne said: “It’s fantastic that Manchester Airport Group has presented this money to local schools.

“It is all part of the deal that we did with the airport to get compensation for local communities affected by the building of the second runway.

“All residents will get the town portion of their Council Tax paid but the pupils of local schools will also benefit. I am delighted that we have achieved such a positive result.”

A spokesman for Manchester Airport added: “We continue to work with many local organisations to enable everyone to share in the benefits that the airport brings.

“Our community work will stay focused on the areas closest to the airport and Knutsford schools already use our extensive education resources.

“We are pleased to make this further contribution and hope this money will bring real benefits to local children.”

Not all schools have received the grant.
St. John's Community School has not, even though it is also under the flight path as much as the other schools, and it would be interesting to know why not?
