UPDATE: A556 tailbacks after five-car smash at motorway slip road

A MOTORIST had to be cut from his vehicle after a four-vehicle crash near the southbound exit slip road to the M6 in Knutsford.

Four cars and one van were involved in the collision just after 1pm but the drivers and passengers sustained minor injuries.

One man was taken to Leighton Hospital for a check up.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews removed the roof of one vehicle to release the casualty who was then left in the care of the ambulance service."

The slip road is now clear but caused long tailbacks on the A556 due to an accident earlier in the day at junction 17.

Driver Joan Edwards said: "The traffic was completely nose to tail. I could see at least four emergency vehicles and blue lights flashing everywhere."
