Waste officials explain rules

MACCLESFIELD Borough Council this week reminded residents about the rules of recycling after a woman complained her tins had not been collected for months.

Tins and jars should be washed, placed in the correct bag or box and left by the kerbside.

"If it's up by the front door, we won't take it," said waste officer Paul Morgan. "It has to be on the kerbside."

Last week Ruth Roberts, 64, of Cranford Avenue, Knutsford, said her tins had not been collected for months.

"I've washed them up and left them in the garden but they won't take my tins because they're full of water," she said.

Mr Morgan said he could not comment without knowing the specifics of Mrs Roberts' case.

Boxes But he added: "We do provide lids for the boxes to prevent water ingress."

He said tins that had not been rinsed would be left by the door.

"It's a health and safety issue," he said. "If it's horrible we put stickers on saying why we've not collected the box."

Irene Wise, 70, of Higher Downs, said she sometimes forgot which bin to put out.

"I have to look down the road at what other people have put out," she said.

One of her neighbours agreed.

"There's so many different boxes and bags now," she said. "It's hard work sorting it all out."

This week Mr Morgan said the rules were necessary to keep the recycling collection orderly.

"The information is available if they're not clear," he said.
