Bottled urine is dumped in lay-by

A MAN has been forced to pick up bottles of urine and bags of sick from a lay-by near his home.

Alan Newnes, who lives in Chester Road, Mere, said he had to collect the rubbish because it was being ignored by Macclesfield Borough Council.

"I counted 12 bottles of urine, three or four bags of sick, dirty nappies and all sorts of rubbish that people are throwing out of vehicles," he said.

"There are also pint pots and broken bottles. This road has 50,000 vehicles a day and it needs to be cleaned on a regular basis."

Mr Newnes, who used to be landlord at the Builders Arms in Knutsford, said the behaviour of those dumping rubbish was disgraceful. But he blamed the council for consistently ignoring the site.

"I've been reporting things for over 12 months and nothing's been done," he said.

"It beggars belief really. I tried to get an answer about when the last time they litter-picked was but they haven't told me."

Mr Newnes, 55, said an officer at the borough council had promised to meet him last week - but then did not turn up.

"There are a lack of things being done and I am trying to get to the bottom of it as a representative of the residents' association but I cannot," he said. "That rubbish there now has been there weeks and weeks."

Last week the Knutsford Guardian reported that 80 tons of rubbish had been dumped on a grass verge off the A556.

And the week before a villager in Plumley said she had picked up 16 bin bags of litter from near her home.

Streetscene manager Paul Morgan said the council cleared sites as and when it became necessary.

"That is absolute rubbish, if you'll pardon the pun," said Mr Newnes.

"This road needs to be litter-picked every month but it never has been." Macclesfield Borough Council was unavailable for comment.
