What about the Heath?

IT SEEMS to me that most of the problems in Knutsford revolve around car parking.

Sixty years ago when my family were farming in Macclesfield four acres of good quality agriculture land was taken from us with a compulsory purchase order to build six council houses.

Surely this could apply to the Heath, which is only fit for dog walkers and dog droppings.

Just a quarter of an acre behind the Conservative Club and the same amount adjacent to Gaskell Avenue would suffice.

This land is not serving any useful purpose and could alleviate the parking and would not be missed from the rambling Heath.

If CPOs worked then, why not now?

I remain mystified.

The problem isn't a lack of parking places. The problem is people can be both lazy and don't want to pay for parking. All car parks in Knutsford are Pay and Display.

The parking problem would be solved overnight if the council made people pay more to park on the road than in car parks, like what happens in Altrincham.

Also Northern Rail should fix the ticket machines at the station car parks and make the car park free for rail users and very expensive for non-rail users.

No! Don't take away the heath! As an outsider, it is one of my favourite bits of Knutsford and makes the nightmarish traffic situation (arguably worse than the parking problem) much more bearable. I can listen to Terry Wogan and gaze over greenery rather than tarmac and car roofs (although of course, such a thing would be impossible in Knutsford - I'd be gazing at the grilles of a zillion 4x4s instead).
Don't encourage pay meters in the streets - it is handy to pop into the shops for a few minutes without worrying about small change/the cost of parking. People just need to be sensible and maybe - horror of horrors - get a bus or walk a bit further than usual?

ps Four acres for six council houses?!?!?!? Wow - they must have been council castles! A sad story in any event.

Regarding parking in Knutsford, well may I suggest that shoppers drive a few miles down the A556 to Northwich.Parking is free and believe it or not the town isnt full of estate agents and charity shops. There is an M&S ,Woolworth,Some excellect supermarkets and some brilliant locally owned shops. But maybe the people of Knutsford prefer to be ripped off with parking fees. Come on try coming to another town, I lived in Mobberley and Knutsford until about 7 yrs ago, and believe me, Northwich is a much friendlier place then Knutsford.

I can tell Brian Driffield doesn't live in Knutsford or he would never consider using the Heath as a car park. As an ex resident of Knutsford, and still a frequent visitor dispite the mileage, I would hate for Knutsford to lose the heath. I never have a problem parking legally!!
