Paul Weller has said there is no way The Jam will ever reform, because a reunion would be against “everything we ever stood for.”

The former frontman of the chart-topping mod-rock band, who had massive success in the late 1970s-early 1980s, has made his feelings clear in a new Sky Arts documentary about the group.

According to the Daily Mirror, in The Jam: About The Young Idea, the Going Underground singer said of reuniting: “Absolutely, categorically, f***ing no. To me it would be against everything we ever stood for.

“More than ever the older I get, the more I want to see what I can do. I just want to push it as far as I can.”

The 57-year-old musician, nicknamed The Modfather, added: “I don’t know where I will end up or what will happen with it. But I think it is my job to do that.”

Explaining why the band broke up in 1982 at the height of their success, Paul said: “I wanted to end it to see what I was capable of. We stopped at the right time. The music has gone on, the music has legs and it’s got longevity.

“The young kids are getting into it now and hopefully in years to come when we are all brown bread people will be discovering it and that is a good place to leave it, ain’t it?”

The newspaper said Paul, who went on to form The Style Council before enjoying a successful solo career, missed the premiere of the documentary earlier this week, which was attended by former bandmates Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler.

Bruce still plays their hits in his current band From The Jam.

He revealed in the documentary that the split was “devastating” for him.

He said: “As far I was concerned I threw all I had into it. It was not like I could go back to being a brain surgeon or anything like that.”

But the bassist and guitarist said that he couldn’t see the original line-up back on stage again.

“I think we are all happy with our lives now,” he said. “Rick is doing his thing. He has got a book coming out.

“There is too much water and time under the bridge now and to be honest it is probably best left there.”

The Jam: About The Young Idea will air on Sky Arts at 10pm on Saturday, September 5.
