Taylor Swift, Naomi Campbell and Zoe Saldana are among the stars who have led tributes to fashion designer Oscar de la Renta.

The Dominican-American designer, who shaped the red carpet wardrobes of socialites and Hollywood stars for more than 40 years, has died at the age of 82, after a long battle with cancer.

Taylor, who wore a pink creation by de la Renta at the 2014 Metropolitan Museum of Art Met Gala in New York, tweeted: " My all-time favourite designer has passed away. Oscar, it was an honour to wear your creations and to know you. In loving memory."

Supermodel Naomi shared a photo of her with the late designer, with the caption: "The Gentleman of Fashion you will always be !!! R I P @oscarprgirl @OscarPRGirl #Oscar de la Renta."

Guardians Of The Galaxy star Zoe added: "Iconic legendary genius, gone but definitely not forgotten #OscarDeLaRenta My heart goes out to the De La Renta family."

The fashion designer died at his home in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and "more than a few dogs", his stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband Alex Bolen said.

"While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar's hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company," their statement said.

"All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar's example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much."

De la Renta dressed many of Hollywood's top stars including Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock. Amal Alamuddin recently wore one of his creations when she married screen heartthrob George Clooney.

His clothes were even woven into episodes of Sex And The City with character Carrie Bradshaw dropping his name - and comparing his designs to poetry.
