THE morale of the story of the Legally Blonde musical is not to judge a book by its cover.

However, initial perceptions of whether a musical centred around a heartbroken homecoming Queen on a pursuit to win back her beau is likely to take your fancy are likely to be pretty accurate.

This lively musical that is full of cheerleading chants, female friendships and lovesick desperation would certainly not be for everyone. The opening song titled “Omigod You Guys” is probably a deal breaker for anyone feeling sceptical.

But the laugh-a-minute show doesn’t take itself seriously and certainly left the audience feeling uplifted and non-plussed about whether the fairy tale could ever be reality.

Bend and Snap

The enthusiasm and cheeriness of Elle Woods, played by 2009 X Factor finalist and Eurovision Contest entrant Lucie Jones, is infectious. Her incredible voice along with the impressive talent of Rita Simons, who most people know better as Eastenders actress Roxy Mitchell, playing Paulette Bonafonte, made the performance even more entertaining.

The plot centres around Elle’s plans of settling down with handsome boyfriend Warner Huntington, played by Liam Doyle, being unexpectedly crushed. She refuses to accept defeat and transforms herself from a dizzy love-struck Malibu fashion guru into a high achieving law undergraduate at Ivy League school Harvard to try and win back her love’s affections.

The somewhat absurd storyline allows people to half-heartedly believe some dreams and the unachievable aren’t always out of reach.

Lucie Jones is serious about the role

There’s plenty of unexpected surprises for fans of the film including roller blading cupids, Irish dancing (yes that is correct) and some cute dogs to add to the mix. What’s not to love?

Novelist Amanda Brown penned Legally Blonde after being inspired of her own experiences of law school where she felt like a fish out of water.

The unpublished manuscript was snapped up and transformed into a big screen hit in 2001, staring Reese Witherspoon. And was later transformed into a box-office smash musical.

Legally Blonde showcases at Manchester’s Palace Theatre until this Saturday.
