THE mayor of Crewe has unveiled a Garden of Remembrance in honour of fallen soldiers, on the centenary anniversary of the First World War.

The Mayor, Clr Pam Minshall, officially opened the garden in the Municipal Square on Saturday, July 19.

She was joined by members of the Royal British Legion, town councillors and residents of Crewe.

In a speech thanking sponsors, Co-Op Funeral Services, and the Royal British Legion, the Mayor said: “the opening of the Garden of Remembrance is but one of many events and activities in Crewe which are commemorating the Centenary of the Great War".

Clr Joy Bratherton, chair of the Crewe town council WW1 Working Group, asks that the public continue to support the event.

"I hope that everyone can join in commemorating those from Crewe who gave their lives in the Great War by contributing to the Garden of Remembrance.

“Poppies can be obtained from the Royal British Legion, next to the Market, Co-op Funeral Services or from the Town Clerk for £1. The idea is that members of the public adopt a name on the war memorial, write the name on the poppy and plant it in the Garden."

The money raised from the poppies will go towards supporting other WWI activities.
