CREWE Town Council will stage a ceremony at 11am on August 4 on the Municipal Square to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War.

The ceremony will take the form of a Remembrance Day service and is expected to last up to 30 minutes.

Clr Joy Bratherton said: “It is important that we mark this event in the proper way.

“We ask that anyone wishing to participate and to lay a wreath in particular contact the town council in order that they can be assured of the opportunity to pay their respects.”

Mayor of Crewe, clr Pam Minshall, added: “I realise this ceremony will take place on a working day, but would ask employers in the town to release employees to join me at the cenotaph on Municipal Square.

“If that is not possible then perhaps people in the town would observe a two minute silence at 11am and reflect on the significance of the date.”

The service will commence at 10:30am and will be supported by the Crewe Male Voice Choir and the Co-op Brass Band. Reverend Steve Clapham will conduct the service.
