Architects do grand work

TWO architects, who learned from experience, have won a place in the final of the Grand Design 2008 Awards.

Nigel Daly and Brian Vowles earned their place with the restoration of Bletchley Manor in Shropshire.

On Tuesday next week viewers of the Channel 4 programme will be able to judge their work alongside two other restoration projects.

The winner will then compete with the successful designers from the other categories for the title of Grand Design 2008.

Last week Mr Daly, who founded Nigel Daly Design in Knutsford, described the two of them as mavericks.

"We are not mainstream," he said. "But I think it's the fact that we're mavericks that some people love.

"We also do the drawings by hand, which is quite rare, so people understand what it is going to look like."

Mr Daly said he had intended to become an actor but abandoned that path when his father became ill.

“It’s incredible to have those architects recognise us."

Instead he began redesigning gardens in Knutsford, which led to the creation of his architectural design business, now based in King Street, Knutsford.

The two men, who do not have any professional qualifications, have over the years renovated a number of listed buildings in Parkfield Road and Chelford Road. One - the Old Court Cottage in Chelford Road near the Carrwood estate - is a familiar sight.

"It looks like a gothic chapel," said Mr Daly.

However it is the restoration of Bletchley Manor in Market Drayton which will be judged in the Grand Design 2008 Awards next Tuesday.

The finalists were picked by a group of the country's leading architects, including Ken Shuttleworth who designed The Gherkin in London.

"It's incredible to have those architects recognise us," said Mr Daly.
