Suspects tested for DNA in search for serial rapist

DNA samples have been taken from about 3000 men as police continue to hunt the so-called Trophy Rapist.

Detectives hunting the man, who has raped at least 10 women and terrorised the female population throughout Southeast England, are also working through a list of names provided after police released an e-fit of the offender last week.

Police have received thousands of calls since making the image public.

Officers have samples of the rapist's DNA taken from his victims and have employed the help of sex profilers and other experts.

Police have visited the homes of dozens of suspects and are also taking saliva swabs from some men.

The rapist's latest victim, a 14-year-old girl from Stevenage, Hertfordshire was able to provide the most detailed description yet of the serial rapist's face.

The man is known only to have attacked women during the week, but police are reluctant to speculate on the reasons apart from suggesting he might work at weekends.

The teenager said her attacker had leathery skin, green-blue eyes, a big nose and stubble. It is believed he is aged between 30 and 50 years of age, and between 5"5 and 5"10 tall.

The rapist has struck in Kent, Surrey, London, Berkshire and Hertfordshire in the last 12 months. Girls as young as 10, 12 and 14-years-old are among his victims.

A number of the rapist's victims have also said their attacker had a gruff voice and some have suggested he had a northeastern accent.

The man has been dubbed the 'trophy rapist' because he collects items of clothing and property from his victims.
