CHILDREN at a Knutsford primary school skipped, ran and danced their way to fundraising success in memory of their former chair of governors.

Pupils of Egerton Primary School held a ‘Kirk-a-thon’ on June 6 in honour of Howard Kirkham, who died from a brain tumour in April at the age of 66.

Participating children were sponsored to skip, dance and run for 15 minutes at a time, and the money raised will be donated to The Brain Tumour Charity.

Howard’s daughter Sara Waters and his wife Hilary were on hand to join in the activities and cheer the children on.

Sara said: “As a family, we are delighted and very grateful to the head teacher, Alison Hooper, that Egerton Primary School hosted such a special charity event in memory of Dad.

“Had he still been here, he would have loved to take part in the event. One of the legacies Dad left was the knowledge that we can all make a difference to other people’s lives in our own small way.”

In addition to his role at the school, Howard was a well-known figure in the Knutsford community. He was finance chairman and a very active member of Knutsford Methodist Church, as well as being involved with the Round Table, 41 Club, Knutsford Golf Club and Knutsford Rotary Club.

Since his death on April 17, Howard’s family – his wife, four children, their partners and seven grand-children – have pledged to raise £10,000 for charities, including The Brain Tumour Charity and East Cheshire Hospice.

They have set themselves fundraising challenges, including a cycle ride from Knutsford to Abersoch, a 24-hour tennis match, the London Marathon and a 48-mile ‘lakes-in-a-day’ run.
